Central Coast Mariners and the worst winless A-League streaks

If you want to introduce your mate to the A-League, don’t have them watch Central Coast Mariners v Wellington Phoenix this Friday. If you want to show the FFA why promotion and relegation should be a thing, have them watch the Central Coast Mariners v Wellington Phoenix this Friday. The stakes aren’t high but they exist, the winner moves off the bottom of the table. The loser is facing the spoon. The Mariners are at home but come in to the match without a win in 11 matches which got us thinking. What are the longest winless streaks in A-League history? Have no fear, we’ve found them and compiled them below.

Western Sydney Wanderers
While Western Sydney Wanderers won the Asian Champions League in 2014 they also went on the worst winless streak in the club’s history. The team went 14 matches without a win from the 2014 Grand Final until Rd 16 in 2014-15. The club  only had four draws in this time, scored 10 goals and conceded 22.

Central Coast Mariners
Tony Walmsley didn’t have a happy time managing the Central Coast Mariners in the 2015-16 season. He failed to win any of his final 10 A-League matches before Paul Okon took over prior to the beginning of last season. But even he went four matches without a win which took their total to 14 without securing a win. They did win three points in this period but that came from three draws. In this time they only scored 14 goals but they conceded 41. Will they match or even surpass this on their current run?

Perth Glory
Perth Glory were National Soccer League powerhouses appearing in four of the last five Grand Finals winning the final two. But they found life in the A-League a little difficult in the early seasons and went on a 19-match winless run between Round 15 2006-07 to Rd 11 2007-08.  There results were as good as they can be when a team goes that long without a win, drawing nine times and losing 10. They scored 14 goals and conceded 26.

Melbourne City
Before the City Football Group took over Melbourne City and brought in the likes of Aaron Mooy, Bruno Fornaroli, and Tim Cahill, they were known as Melbourne Heart, had players such as Michael Misfud, Dylan Macallister, and David Vrankovic, they also went 19 matches without a win between Round 23 2012-13 and Round 14 2013-14. In that match they lost 14 matches and had five draws. They scored 11 goals and conceded 35 in this run.

New Zealand Knights
Arguably the worst team in A-League history, New Zealand Knights went 19 matches without a victory. It started in Round 4 in the 2005-06 season and didn’t come to an end until they beat Adelaide United in Round 2 of the 2006-07 season. In that time they lost 15 matches and had four draws. They conceded 12 goals and conceded 42 goals.
