Central Coast set to extend yet another streak

The Central Coast Mariners are a historic A-League club. They’ve lost the most Grand Finals, they’ve lost the most games in a season, conceded the most goals in a season, and went the longest without keeping a clean sheet just to name a few. And regardless of who starts in goals for the Mariners this season they will extend another record they hold: Fielding the most goalkeepers in A-League history. So before we get to the Mariners let’s take a look how they compare to the other team

Adelaide United and Sydney FC (7)

Both Adelaide United and Sydney FC have played seven goalkeepers in the A-League tenure. Eugene Galekovic spent 10 years in Adelaide’s goal before making the move to Melbourne City this off-season. He is preceded by youngsters Daniel Margush and Paul Izzo.

Sydney FC don’t usually switch goalkeepers during the season with Clint Bolton playing every match in three of his four seasons at the club, Vedran Janjetovic also played every match in multiple seasons while Danny Vukovic only missed one match in goal last season.

Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix (8)
Michael Theo has been a regular in Brisbane Roar’s side since the 2010-11 season and has made 155 appearances for the club. Jamie Young has been by his side since 2014 but Brisbane have also used Liam Reddy, Tom Willis, and Scott Higgins in goals to name a few.

Wellington Phoenix have used Glen Moss on 134 occasions but have also played All White veteran Mark Paston, former Premier League player Tony Warner, and Perth Glory glovesman Reddy.

Newcastle Jets (9)
While Newcastle go through managers like they’re going out of fashion, they same can’t be said for their goalkeepers. Ben Kennedy was apart of the squad every season until departing down the F3 to join the Mariners this season. Mark Birighitti, Jack Duncan, Ante Covic, and that man again, Liam Reddy are some of the other names to put on the gloves in the Hunter.

Most clean sheets (players)

  • Danny Vukovic (85)
  • Eugene Galekovic (72)
  • Michael Theo (68)
  • Liam Reddy (59)
  • Clint Bolton (52)

Most clean sheets (club)

  • Sydney FC (95)
  • Melbourne Victory (95)
  • Central Coast Mariners (93)
  • Brisbane Roar (90)
  • Adelaide United (88)

Melbourne Victory (11)
As shown above Melbourne Victory have kept the most clean sheets in A-League history (alongside Sydney FC) and are five away from keeping their 100th. Michael Theo, Eugene Galekovic, Mitchell Langerak, Michael Petkovic, Ante Covic, Nathan Coe, and Danny Vukovic are just some of the names who have contributed to those. Not a bid list of former players.

Central Coast Mariners (13)
Paul Okon has opted for a fresh start this season signing Ben Kennedy from rivals Newcastle and recruiting Tottenham youngster (appropriately named) Thomas Glover on loan. Meaning whoever starts in goals this season will be their 14th goalkeeper.
That’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Liam Reddy, Danny Vukovic and Mat Ryan (maybe you’ve heard of them) have stood in goals at Central Coast Stadium before them.
