Chelsea’s loan fiasco has hit great heights

If there are two things Chelsea like the most in this world it’s re-signing former players for more than they sold them, and sending their younger players out on loan. At the time of writing Chelsea have 25 players out on loan for the 2017-18 season. For some players it’s only for a season or two. For others they probably forget they’re contracted to the Premier League champions. Let’s take a look at how long Chelsea’s players have spent out on loan.

Jamal Blackman
Jamal Blackman has been at Chelsea since he was 13. In 2012, the 19-year-old joined the senior club. Since 2012 Chelsea have used five goalkeepers. None of those have been Blackman. The 6’6 goalkeeper has been loaned out to Middlesbrough, Osterunds FK, Wycombe Wanderers, and Sheffield United where he will spend this season. He has made 54 appearances in four loan deals that will have spread across 621 days by the end of the season if he is not recalled.

Todd Kane
Despite being promoted from Chelsea’s youth to senior team in 2011, Todd Kane is yet to make his Premier League debut for the club he has technically spent the past 16 years at.

Loan spells at Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, NEC Nijmegen, and now he is at FC Groningen with Socceroo Ajdin Hrustic.

Kane has made 90 appearances between the six loan deals and if he is not recalled by Chelsea before the end of the season he would’ve spent 1015 days on loan. Kane is pretty hot name in the Premier League these days, maybe Chelsea should take a chance?

Matej Delac
If you thought Blackman has been waiting a while then Bosnian glovesman, Matej Delac has been waiting for an eternity. Joining the club in 2010 from Inter Zapresic he has made 98 appearances in 10 loan deals without making a single appearance for the Blues.

Following John Terry’s departure the 24-year-old is actually the club’s longest serving player but with no loan deal set for this season and considering Willy Caballero and Eduardo signed with the club it looks like he is out the door after spending 1430 days out on loan.

Lucas Piazon
There was a fair bit of hype surrounding ex-Fustal player Lucas Piazon signing with the club in 2012. He has only made one Premier League appearance since spending the rest of his time on loan at Malaga, Vitesse, Eintracht Frankfurt, Reading, and currently neighbours Fulham.

The Brazilian has been at Craven Cottage since August last year and will have spent 1552 days on loan if he is still there at the end of this season.

Tomas Kalas
Tomas Kalas’ Chelsea debut will be forever remembered, replacing John Terry in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield in the 2013-14 season (yes, the match where Steven Gerrard slipped). Since then he has only made one more appearance.

Kalas signed for the club in 2010 and has spent loan deals at Sigma Olomouc, Vitesse, FC Koln, Middlesbrough and Fulham, where he has been at since July last year.

If he remains with Piazon at Fulham until the end of the season he would’ve chalked up 2231 days on loan. Chelsea have hired and fired seven managers in that time.
