Jets set new record in Victory win

Newcastle Jets’ first loss of the season last week seemed to give them a much needed boost, defeating Melbourne Victory 4-1 at McDonald Jones Stadium to return to the top of the A-League summit. Dimitri Petratos and Andrew Nabbout were in top form, Victory failed to build on last week’s win and continued their worst start to an A-League season, while two-time championship winning coach with the Victory, Ernie Merrick broke another Newcastle Jets record.

When Kosta Barbarouses put Victory ahead after five minutes with a wonderful volley it was the sixth time this season Newcastle have conceded the opening goal, four of those have come inside the first 10 minutes. However Daniel Georgievski equalised eight minutes later, Nabbout nabbed a brace, and DJ by day, footballer by night Joe Champness scored his second A-League goal. Long forgetting Barbarouses’ opening goal.

It was the fifth time the Jets have conceded first but still managed to earn points this season. In fact 11 of their 17 points have been earned after conceding first, which is a new club record.

  • 5-1 win over Central Coast Mariners
  • 2-2 draw with Perth Glory
  • 1-1 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers
  • 2-1 win over Adelaide United
  • 4-1 win over Melbourne Victory

The previous record was 10 points which they won in 15 matches last season. If they continue in the form they have started this season in they are going to smash that record. Here is how many points they have won after conceding first in past seasons

2016-17 – 10 points

2011-12 – 9 points

2015-16 – 8 points

2012-13 – 6 points

2007-08 – 6 points

2013-14 – 3 points

2006-07 – 3 points

2014-15 – 2 points

2008-09 – 2 points

2010-11 – 1 point

2009-10 – 1 point

2005-06 – 1 point

As you can see from the above stats, Newcastle have struggled when conceding first for a majority of the A-League’s 13 seasons but things look a little different in the Hunter this season and this is just one of a number of changes Ernie Merrick has made to the club.

Newcastle also fell two goals short of equalling Brisbane Roar’s 2011-12 record of most goals scored after eight rounds, having scored 20 so far this season.
