Central Coast Mariners have jumped into fifth position with an emphatic 4-1 victory away to Wellington Phoenix. Daniel de Silva, Andrew Hoole, and Trent Buhagiar scored in the second half after taking the lead on 39 minutes thanks to an Andrija Kaluderovic own goal. Dario Vidosic scored his fourth goal of the season but it was only a consolation as the Nix fell to their fourth loss of the season.
Speaking of the number four, it was the first time since February 2013 that the Mariners have scored more goals or more in a match.
In a totally different time they defeated Melbourne Victory 6-2 on their way to winning the 2012-13 championship. That’s 125 matches between drinks for the 2013 champions. Scoring four goals isn’t an uncommon thing in the A-League, or football in general, in fact Newcastle put four past Victory at the beginning of the round, and Wellington beat Perth Glory 5-2 in Round Six, but heading into the Phoenix v Mariners match here are the current number of matches teams have gone without scoring four goals.
- Central Coast Mariners 125
- Adelaide United 35
- Sydney FC 26
- Western Sydney Wanderers 20
- Brisbane Roar 15
- Melbourne Victory 15
- Perth Glory 10
- Melbourne City 9
- Wellington Phoenix 1
- Newcastle Jets 0
Welcome back, Central Coast, it’s been a long time.
