Newcastle Jets continued their undefeated start to the season with a 3-0 victory over Wellington Phoenix at McDonald Jones Stadium. The home side were always in control but it took a brace from leading goal scorer Roy O’Donovan and an Andrew Nabbout strike either side of the break to secure the victory. The Jets have already started the season in top form and are ending streaks that have plagued them over the years. Here are another three from the Phoenix win.
Merrick downs the Nix
Ernie Merrick spent four seasons coaching Wellington Phoenix between 2013-2016 so it has been a while since he’s been in the opposite dugout. The experienced Scotsman versed the club for the first time since January 2011 and he secured his first win over the side since January 2010, when Melbourne Victory won 4-0.
Can you Smeltz what O’Donovan is cooking?
Roy O’Donovan scored his sixth and seventh goal of the 2017-18 season after netting a first half double in the win. The Irishman has seven goals after six matches which is the most since Shane Smeltz scored eight after the first six matches of the 2009-10 season. Similarly to O’Donovan, Smeltz scored four against North Queensland Fury, a brace against Sydney FC, and scored goals against Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United.
Jets keep clean sheet
Newcastle have ended a couple of droughts so far this season. They’ve ended their 10 match winless run. They ended their five-match goal drought. The win against Wellington was their first at home in six matches dating back to January this year and they also kept their first clean sheet in 12 matches dating back to February this year. Not bad for a five week period.
