Most A-League appearances without a goal

Melbourne Victory’s Jason Geria celebrated his 100th A-League appearance in his side’s 1-1 draw against the Central Coast Mariners in hellish conditions in Geelong. The draw leaves the Victory in fourth position and the result also leaves Jason Geria will a little bit of (unwanted history). The Canberra-born defender is just the third player to play 100 matches without a goal.

Jason Geria
Jason Geria has been a mainstay at right back for Melbourne Victory since debuting for the club in March 2013. He of course celebrated his 100th A-League appearance in Victory’s 1-1 draw with the Central Coast Mariners in Round 14. Born in Canberra, it’s no surprise he’s been boring going forward, the one-time Socceroo is now the third player in A-League history to play 100 matches without scoring a single goal.

Shane Stefanutto
Shane Stefanutto was 36 years old when he decided to grow a man-bun. In what is probably the 21st century equivalent of buying a sports car in a mid-life crisis. Stefanutto made 141 appearances (seven for the defunct North Queensland Fury, and 134 for Brisbane Roar). While he assisted a few goals every now and then he never scored one for himself.

Adam D’Apuzzo
Adam D’Apuzzo is the sixth highest capped Newcastle Jets with 102 appearances. During that stint he won a A-League championship and a wooden spoon. With all those ups and downs he failed to find the back of the net before retiring in 2011 to pursue a career as an accountant (because, why not?).

Tony Popovic convinced the left back to return for the Western Sydney Wanderers’ maiden season. D’Apuzzo made a further 48 appearances and appeared in the 2014 A-League Grand Final where they lost 2-1 to Brisbane. He then retired for a second time without scoring a single goal.

His brother David played 10 matches for the Central Coast Mariners between 2008-10 and failed to score as well.

Western Sydney Wanderers’ left back Jack Clisby is close to becoming the fourth while there are three other current players who aren’t too far away.

Current players

  • Jason Geria – 100 appearances
  • Jack Clisby – 89 appearances
  • Liam Rose – 62 appearances
  • Jacob Poscoliero – 55 appearances
  • Kearyn Baccus – 54 appearances
