Premier League players that cost absolutely nothing

Following the humongous transfer of Neymar from Barcelona to PSG, Liverpool rejecting a big money offer for Coutinho from the Catalans, and further deals including the likes of Alvaro Morata, Romelu Lukaku and Alexandre Lacazette, we have decided to dive into the world of free transfers. Who is available? Well actually some very good players. Wayne Rooney was a freebie for Everton, as was Zlatan Imbrahimovic for Manchester United last season.

Zlatan Imbrahimovic

We may as well start with the Swede, and we are sure he would prefer to be listed first. Anyway, once again, Zlatan Imbrahimovic is eligible on a free transfer. This is the player that scored 17 times in 28 appearances for Manchester United in 2016-17, while creating five assists. Once upon a time he moved from Inter to Barcelona for  €69.5 million, and then later from the Catalans to AC Milan for another outrageous figure. PSG got in on that act too.

There are rumours floating around that the Red Devils were attempting to work out a new deal, but with Romelu Lukaku coming in it seems unlikely that Imbrahimovic will want to play second fiddle.

Victor Valdes

Barcelona may play as the theme to this story, because we have another former representative in the shape of goalkeeper, Victor Valdes. The Spaniard arrived at Old Trafford a few years ago and has been in and out of the reversing door ever since, following loan stints with Standard Liege in Belgium and most recently, Middlesbrough. He played 28 games last season and kept just nine clean sheets and conceding a total of 36 goals. His lack of regular football since leaving Barcelona has certainly made him a little rusty, but it would be hard to argue against bringing him in for absolutely nothing.

Shay Given

Shay Given is a Premier League goalkeeping stalwart, having played for Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Manchester City among others. His most recent EPL date was with Stoke City and unfortunately he ordered all the wrong things. The veteran made only five appearances and in that short time he conceded a whopping 14 goals. However, if we look through his track record it is a rather attractive proposition. He has a wealth of experience with more than 450 Premier League games under his belt, as well two assists, believe it or not.

Bacary Sagna

He left Arsenal to chase trophies at Manchester City, and he definitely hoisted a few, however Bacary Sagna is now a free agent and it is hard to see a big club swooping in. We know he has plenty of PL experience, but last season he played a support role and made only 17 appearances. In that time, Manchester City managed to hold nine clean sheets and conceded 14 goals. However, Sagna still demonstrated his qualities, winning 61% of 23 tackles, while making 48 clearances and winning 70 duels overall. There is no doubt this would be a smart pick up for any Premier League side looking for some extra squad depth.
