Brendon Santalab announced his return to Western Sydney’s starting xi with a goal in the Wanderers’ controversial 2-0 victory over Central Coast Mariners. It was his eight goal in 13 games against the side, and his fifth in seven at Central Coast Stadium. But that’s not the A-League record he set, no, but the one he did is very impressive.
Santalab’s goal marked the 25th consecutive match the Wanderers have gone unbeaten when the striker has found the back of the net. Beating the record of 24 previously held by former Mariner strike Daniel McBreen.
As well as Saturday’s win, the Wanderers have either won or drawn nine matches in each of the past two seasons, twice in the 2014-15 season, and four matches in 2013-14. The last time Western Sydney lost a match Santalab scored in was a 3-1 loss to Brisbane Roar in November 2013. For the record the Wanderers have won 18 of the 25 matches he has scored in, drawing seven. He has scored 32 times during this period.
Wanderers fans will be hoping to see more of Santa, and not just during the Christmas season, as he scored the first and assisted the second in their win over the Mariners.
However the record is already his, and the more he can extend the longer it’s going to take for a player to match it.
