The A-League’s best comebacks

3-0 up and they f**ked it up. By now you would know that Wellington had to suffice with a 3-all draw against Brisbane despite leading 3-0 after 20 minutes. Roy Krishna scored the best goal ever scored by a Fijian footballer either side of an Andrija Kaluderovic brace. However Massimo Maccarone scored two of his own either side an Avraam Papadopoulos tap in as the scores finished as they started, level. It was only the sixth time a side has clawed from 3-0 down to grab a result, but how does Brisbane’s effort compare to the five before it? Let’s take a look.

Melbourne Victory
In the 2015-16 season, Melbourne Victory found themselves as the away team in a match played in Geelong and more embarrassingly found themselves 3-0 down after 35 minutes to the Central Coast Mariners side enduring possibly the worst season in Australian history. Besart Berisha and Archie Thompson scored to put Victory behind by one goal after 66 minutes but had to wait until stoppage time for Berisha to score the equalising goal. Behind Brisbane’s 37 minute comeback, Victory’s 32 minutes is the fifth best.

Central Coast Mariners
So the Mariners are going to feature quite prominently on this list. Their first positive appearance on the list takes us to the beginning of the 2016-17 season when they found themselves 3-0 down away to Perth after 35 minutes. Similarly to Berisha, Roy O’Donovan netted a brace (in the 56th and 86th minute) while a calamity at the back saw Liam Reddy deflect the ball into his own net in the 84th minute. It took the Mariners half an hour to score three goals and that is their longest time.

Central Coast Mariners
In fact, 22 minutes isn’t even their quickest time. But it’s their next entry, Travis Dodd, Robbie Cornthwaite, and Cristiano scored as Adelaide led 3-0 after 50 minutes midway through the 2008-09 season. At the time no team had ever squandered a three-goal lead so victory look assured. That was until Mile Jedinak scored from long range then the spot in the 66th and 76th minute. Before Matt Simon brought the game level after 86 minutes.

Central Coast Mariners
Three weeks later the Mariners found themselves 3-0 down to Sydney after Terry McFlynn scored in the 57th minute. They could’ve had four if Stu Musialik hadn’t hit the crossbar from point blank range. Instead Matt Simon scored in the 63rd minute, Nik Mrdja in the 78th, and Simon again in the 81st minute gave the Mariners their second draw after being 3-0 down in the space of a month, with the three goals coming in the space of 15 minutes.

Western Sydney Wanderers
We all know this story. Semi-final 2015-16 Brisbane Roar go 3-0 up after 23 minutes against Western Sydney at Pirtek Stadium thanks to goals from Dimi Petratos, an own goal from Andreu, and Jamie Maclaren. Then this happened. Romeo Castelen scored a thunderous free-kick after 26 minutes, Brendan Santalab made it 3-2 after 39 minutes. Castelen scored in the 53rd and 59th minute. Maclaren scored late before Dario Vidosic made it 5-4 to the Wanderers in extra-time. It took 23 minutes to make it 3-3 but as they only team to go on and win from 3-0 down, they top the list.
