The other record Newcastle broke

Newcastle Jets have opened up an 11-point buffer in second place thanks to their 2-1 victory over league leaders Sydney FC in front of 18,156 fans at McDonald Jones Stadium. For the past two seasons it has been Graham Arnold’s men setting new A-League records while Ernie Merrick has done the same with the Newcastle Jets’ record books this season and the win over Sydney set another one… but it’s not the one you think.

So here are a list of droughts Newcastle ended with the win.

  • First win against Sydney FC in 16 matches
  • First win against Sydney FC at home since 2012
  • First win over a Graham Arnold managed side in 15 matches
  • Andrew Nabbout became the first Newcastle player in four seasons to score 10 goals in a season
  • Newcastle have scored in 22 consecutive matches which is the second longest scoring streak in A-League history

But the creme de la creme… Newcastle secured their eighth victory at home in a season for the first time ever.

This season they have beat Melbourne Victory twice, Wellington Phoenix, Adelaide United, Western Sydney Wanderers, Central Coast Mariners, Brisbane Roar, and now Sydney FC. They still have to play Melbourne City and Perth Glory at home which would give them a clean sweep.
