Tide turns for Sydney and the Mariners

Five years ago, almost to this day the Central Coast Mariners decimated a hapless Sydney FC 7-2 at Central Coast Stadium. Graham Arnold led the Mariners to their first A-League championship that season, but turn the clock forward to the present day and the all conquering Sky Blues, led by Arnold, head to the same stadium to face a side that has only made the finals once since the 2012-13 season. It’s November 2017 so how much has changed in these two clubs.

For those Sydney FC fans who have completely destroyed this memory, or the Mariners fans wanting to re-live the club at their highest of highs, here are the highlights of the clash.

But oh boy, a lot has changed in five years, as is expected, but who knew there’d be such a shift in form. Obviously Sydney ‘s 2016-17 season and the Mariners 2015-16 season has played a huge part in this but this is how the two teams have fared since that match.

The Mariners have loss 47.4 per cent of their matches since, while the Sky Blues have won 47.8 per cent. What a turnaround in form!?

But it’s not just the form that has changed, both sides, like pretty much all A-League teams, have had a lot of players come and go.

Sydney FC have won 10 of the past 14 fixtures including eight of the past nine. They have outscored the yellow and navy 30 to 13. The Mariners are winless against Sydney FC since March 2014. By the time kick off arrives (if Sydney finish their match with Melbourne City) the winless streak would have reached 1350 days.
